Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

I signed up through the new USAService.org website for me, my mom and Bob to go to the MLK Day Community Food Drive event and Reid Park. My mom went through the cupboards and got about 2 bags of stuff then we went to Safeway and bought some soups, pasta, pasta sauce, and canned veggie, about6 bags worth and went down to Reid Park.

I wasn't sure what to expect and after awhile we found it and a place to park.I think I expected there to be more promotion of the Food Bank and I hope they are able to "Stuff the Truck". When we got there around 11:30am it was pretty spare. There were tons of people or all different kinds. They had music and entertainers and a couple food booths.

I also expected there to be more booths there from local non-profits to try and get volunteers. I saw one booth with a weaving loom out and it turned out to be for the Girl Scouts. A woman came up and asked me if I had any memories of being a girl scout, but I never was one. My mom talked to her a bit and we talked about how we all did dance when we were younger and were able to because my mom worked at the studio in return for our lessons. This prompted the lady to mention that she never has enough parents volunteering but always has them wanting their girls to join. So I asked her if they ever have someone teach the girls crochet and gave her my info so they could contact me if they wanted that. I think that will be interesting and I've been wanting to teach that again. I would like to get my mom and Bob to go with me to do something like this at least once a month this year, to try and give back to the community in some small way as much as we can.
